MSE receives $1.03M Research Grant for POSTECH Collaboration PDF Print E-mail

The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has received a $1.03M research and education grant from Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) towards a research and education collaborative on Manufacturing Systems Engineering.

In Fall 2011, POSTECH and the Korean Government conducted an extensive study of several manufacturing programs at leading US universities and chose the MSE program at UW-Madison as the only partner university for a multi-year collaboration involving student exchange, faculty research, and joint degree programs.

Pohang University of Science and Technology or POSTECH is a private university, based in Pohang, South Korea, which is dedicated to research and education in science and technology. In 1998, it was ranked by Asiaweek as the best science and technology university in Asia. Furthermore, from 2002–2006, one of Korea's most circulated daily newspapers, JoonAng Ilbo ranked POSTECH as the leading university in Korea.

As part of this project, the MSE program will collaborate with POSTECH to conduct joint research and educational activities in emerging areas of manufacturing and plant systems engineering such as Front End Engineering Design and Project Management. Within these broad areas, the emphasis will be in on (i) manufacturing processes and control, (ii) design, operation, and improvement of manufacturing systems, (iii) product design and process planning, and the (iv) management and organizational aspects in manufacturing.

UW-Madison is currently hosting twelve MSE students from Korea. During 2012, these students will work with MSE faculty on joint activities including research and education (through independent study research projects and coursework) on various aspects of manufacturing systems engineering. They will complete the rest of their MS in MSE program through online course offerings developed in collaboration with Engineering Professional Development (EPD).
